Survivor Blog #3.5
One question I have is why is it that the characters on the show have the roles that they do. Such as, there always seems to be men as the “leader” of the tribes. I feel like for the most part I see the men doing the physical work such as getting wood for the fire, fishing, building the shelter and the women are cooking and mostly relaxing none of them ever really do much work. Maybe they feel entitled and that they are supposed to act this way. Another observation I have noticed is that when there are challenges and some people are able to sit out it always seems to be the women who sit out first. Why do the participants feel like they can use their sexuality to get themselves through the game? How does it affect the game? I have not seen this as much on this season but I know that it was a strategy used on other seasons. With the voting off process why do the other members of the tribe vote someone off the show? I feel like there are other ways for the producers of the show to have the cast members go home. I think that this does reflect on our culture. Having the players go home this way gives the show a little more edge with the audience and shows the remaining participants true colors because they have to deceive and cheat.

So about this whole reality show thing. I think part of the hype about it is that we get so involved in them like we are on the show too. They even can play along pretty much from their living room. Saying who they would send home or pick and why, you know. It is really weird. I was yelling at the t.v. last week and after I thought to myself, “what are you doing? They cannot hear you.” I felt so silly but I mean it is something that people do. I think also part of the fun is trying to guess who is going to go home or who will be picked to win in the end. I know that once I start watching a show like Survivor I feel like I need to finish so that I can find out who wins. These reality shows do a lot with suspense, which I am sure hooks the viewers.
What I talked about last time with Courtney talking about Pavarti. Well she was saying that she is always so flirtatious with all the men and that is how she gets anywhere in the game. Then they showed Pavarti running up to Russell saying, “My hero,” and giving him a big hug. Personally, I do not blame her because I would do the same thing if I was on the show. I think I have a pretty good understanding of how influential a pretty woman can be to a man. I would work the sex appeal like no other if I was on that show.

So I kind of sort of really do not like Russell. I think that he is very very very manipulative and I hate that and that the other players, well most of them at least, play into it and do not call him out on it or anything. It drives me completely crazy. I was yelling at the t.v. last night. I do not think that they realize when he says something like, “Oh yeah, I want to take you to the final 3,” that he says that to everyone just to have them vote on his side. I just do not understand how these people think they can trust him when he looks at Sandra and Courtney and says I want one of you two to go home. He is just such a weasel. I think that when the merger comes the best thing that all the other players should do is vote him out. I sure hope that happens. Or, what could happen is he could start talking to the Heroes tribe and try to get some of them to flip and vote with him. He reminds me of a communist. So really they need to get rid of Russell as soon as possible. I was really sad that Boston Rob went home last night. He was my favorite and honestly, he is a really good player. However, I think that he did get a little reality check coming into this season, because he realized that he was not the top dog anymore. I think that hurt him a little bit and in this past episode he even said to Jerry, “You know, my back is against the wall here,” that shows his vulnerability. Anyway, I really liked him and I hope to see him again in another season. Quick recap of what happened last night. Well, you could see a little animosity on the Villains’ tribe. They were talking about one another and Courtney was saying how she did not like Pavarti. Then it was time of the reward challenge. They had to play basketball in the ocean pretty much and the Heroes were actually able to win a challenge, so that was good for them. Their reward was that they got to go have a nice picnic in this forest near a beautiful waterfall. When they got there they were given a piece of paper but, they decided not to read it till they got back to camp. That did not happen and they read it there saying that there was a hidden immunity idol at their camp. They decided to find it as a tribe and keep it as a tribe. This might be a good idea for the merge. This win gave them some confidence and they were able to win the immunity challenge sending the Villains to tribal council. Rob was scrambling to not get sent home. At tribal council there were some heated words exchanged between Rob and Russell. They both knew that it was one of the two going home and as I said before it was Rob sadly =[

The cast is broken up into 2 teams, the Villains and the Heroes. On the Villains team is, as of this point, Russell, Parvati, Boston Rob, Courtney, Coach, Danielle, Jerri and Sandra. The players still on the Heroes team are JT, Amanda, Candice, Colby and Rupert. The Heroes were able to win the first challenge of the season. Since this challenge the Villains have been prevailing. This sends the Heroes to tribal council every night. This takes the number of players from 10 down to 5 while the Villains still have 8. This gives the Villains an advantage over the Heroes. Many of the players have gotten ill as well during this season so far. There have been separated shoulders, broken toes and hurt knees. There was one player that had passed out as well, due to the conditions these people are living in. Most are not used to this environment, although, all of these contestants have participated in this game before. Another major part of the game is alliances. In the Heroes tribe there are 2 alliances, 3 (JT, Rupert and Amanda) against 2 (Candice and Colby). In the Villains tribe there are also 2 alliances, 5 (Boston Rob, Courtney, Coach, Sandra and Jerri) against 3 (Parvati, Russell and Danielle). On this tribe one of the members of the alliance of 3 has the immunity idol. In this last episode however, Russell, gave the immunity idol to Parvati. This past week both tribes had to vote off a member. From the Villains tribe went Tyson, and from the Heroes tribe went James. We will have to see how this all pans out next week.
I feel as though survivor has started many fads in our culture or have contributed to them. The first I think is that it is a reality tv show. I think Survivor is somewhat of a founding father to the other reality tv shows. Before Survivor we had the Real World is really the only other reality show. Now everywhere you look there is a new reality show airing. We have the Bachelor, Bachelorette, Super Nanny, I love money and the list goes on and on. I think that Survivor showed the Americans wanted to see this kind of entertainment. Also on the show you could say that there is quite a bit of sexuality. Not only in this season but in other seasons as well, the women and even some men, have used their physical appearance and sexuality to get what they want from the opposite sex. They have been able to keep themselves from being voted off or in some cases completely the opposite. From this show there has also been a couple couples that have gotten married. One example is Boston Rob. He met his wife Amber on this show. This show also depicts many traits that can be seen in many Americans, such as deceit, greed and competitiveness. In the game the participants have to lie and compete constantly and they are all vying for the million dollar prize at the end.
